Tennis Professional And Member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Looking for the best tennis lessons in the Sun Valley, Idaho area. Now you can improve your game with lessons from Mats Wilander, former #1 ranking tennis professional and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Mats is the former World Number 1 tennis player, originally from Sweden. From 1982 to 1988, Mats won seven Grand Slam singles titles (three at the French Open, three at the Australian Open, and one at the US Open), and one Grand Slam men’s doubles title (at Wimbledon). His breakthrough came suddenly and unexpectedly (even in Sweden) when he won the 1982 French Open.

3 Grand Slam Singles Titles In One Year

In 1988, Mats won three of the four Grand Slam singles events and finished that year ranked World Number 1. Mats won the Australian Open twice when that tournament was still played on grass courts. This makes Mats one of only six men (along with Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic) to have won Grand Slam singles titles on grass courts, hard courts, and clay courts. He and Rafael Nadal are the only men in tennis history to have won at least two Grand Slam singles titles on each of the three surfaces (2 Australian when it was played on grass, 1 Australian and 1 US on hard, and 3 French on clay).

4 Grand Slams By Age 20

Mats won his fourth Grand Slam singles title at the age of 20, the youngest man in history to have achieved that feat. He also won eight Grand Prix Super Series titles (1983–88), the precursors to the current ATP World Tour Masters 1000. He won 33 singles titles and seven doubles titles during his career. He was also a driving force behind Sweden’s run of seven consecutive Davis Cup finals in the 1980s.

International Tennis Hall Of Fame

Mats was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002. This is one of tennis’ highest honors, with fewer than 100 former tennis players a members of this group. Mats is considered one of the great players of all time along with other tennis stars like Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, and Boris Becker.

After The Tour

Mats and his family moved to Hailey Idaho (near Sun Valley) following his retirement from the tennis tour. Since retiring as a player, he has served as captain of the Swedish Davis Cup team. Wilander also served as commentator for tennis matches on Eurosport.

Mats is co-owner and head tennis coach at Gravity Fitness and Tennis and is available for tennis lessons when not traveling as a commentator for international tennis events.
